Holden’s Soccer Season Wrap-up

Last weekend was Holden’s last soccer game. I’d say that the season was a success. Holden ended up making 2 goals and really seemed to improve throughout the season. His social skills definitely were the most used skills! :-) It was fun to watch.

Thanks to everyone that came to cheer him on!!

Welcome to Holland

I never post stuff like this but we got this poem from Hudson’s teacher today and I thought it was just really touching.

Welcome to Holland
By Emily Perl Kingsley

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability – to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this…..

When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip – to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.”

“Holland?!?” You say. “What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.”

But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It’s just a different place. It’s slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around…. and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills…and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy…and they’re all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.”

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away…because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.

But… if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things…about Holland.

Hudson is going to school!

Well I got the call last Thursday that we’ve been waiting for. Hudson is starting school. I immediately decided it was too fast & “we” weren’t ready! :-)

Of course we said Oh how excited we were that he was ready. Today we met his new teacher Ms. Melissa, and I have to say that now I am actually excited! I think he will be in great hands.

Hopefully we’ll have lots of updates on all the changes in our precious Baby Hudson. (I don’t care if he is going to school he’s still Baby Hudson to me!)

Maybe the funniest thing Holden has ever said!

Hudson has made such good progress this summer we (meaning me) have relaxed a little and decided to take the boys to the beach.

So today we started the day at the beach, Holden is a total beach bum! Hudson isn’t a fan so when we came back I brought Hudson up for a bath and Tom took Holden to the pool.

Apparently there were 2 little girls at the pool and started talking to Holden pretty quickly (and why wouldn’t they? He is SO CUTE!) So the girls were from somewhere down south, Tennessee, Mississippi? with thick southern accents. So when they asked him what his name was this is what he said. “I can’t understand you, I don’t speak spanish”

More from Holden

A couple more little tidbits from Holden. Both of these were within 10 minutes of each other.

Tonight I was telling Tom about Will’s day at the babysitter. (It was a rough day and I was saying he had bit someone.)
A few minutes later this is what Holden told me.

“Ma, you know why I don’t want to go to Will’s house? Because I don’t want him to bite the Hell out of me.”

Holden was then in the bathroom and I hear the Darth Vader theme being sang while he’s using the facilities.

I love that kid!!!

Holden

So I needed to get down 2 things that Holden said in the last few weeks before I forget them.

The 1st one is…
We’ve been having discussions about good attitudes as my precious boy is four going on fourteen.

So Holden says to me “Duh is a bad word right Mommy” “Yes, Holden Duh is a bad word.”
To this Holden says “So when I Wee-Wee that means Duh”

The 2nd is…
He was spending the day with Uncle Johnny & Aunt Terri. They asked him what he thought about something.
Holden’s answer was “I just have to do what’s right for the people.”

He is totally PRICELESS!

Update on Hudson

Hudson has had a great weekend. His “baby hudson whisperer” brother decided he
liked a new ball. Well apparently Holden was right because he’s been playing with it
since! It doesn’t sound like a big deal but this was a breakthrough for our boy.

He brought tears to his mother’s eyes!

Family Photos

I love the new site design that Tom did for me. So I’m newly committed to adding content regularly!

We had family photos taken a few weeks ago and I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. I think Holden may have a calling to be a model!

Check out all the photos in the gallery.

New site design

We have upgraded and updated the site design for Holdensplace.com.  Hope you like it.
